The Profound Teaching of Minling Dorsem (Mindroling Vajrasattva Practice)

Introduction

Among all treasure revealers’ crown jewels stands the Dharma King Terdak Lingpa, who revealed this profound treasure teaching known as Minling Dorsem.

The Root Verse

“More profound than the profound,

The pinnacle of all profound vehicles,

The ultimate path to enlightenment,

The heart practice of Vajrasattva…”

Nature and Scope

Vajrasattva embodies the essence of all buddha families and mandalas. This practice serves as the root source of all tantras and vidya mantras. Nothing is excluded – all deities and mantras are encompassed within it, with limitless manifestations of enlightened qualities.

Scriptural Authority

The Great Sutra of the United Intent of All Buddhas states that merely hearing Vajrasattva’s name brings seven benefits:

  1. Equals having practiced preliminaries with many buddhas
  2. Ensures rebirth in Vajrasattva’s pure realm
  3. Receives the buddhas’ blessings
  4. Guarantees emergence in the Mahayana path
  5. Develops supernatural powers
  6. Becomes a true child of the buddhas
  7. Gains the eye of supreme insight

Essential Characteristics

This practice uniquely unifies three approaches like butter extracted from milk:

  • Generation Stage practices
  • Completion Stage methods
  • Dzogchen teachings

Lineage Origins

It combines the heart essence of three supreme masters:

  • Guru Padmasambhava
  • Vimalamitra
  • Vajra Humkara

Transmission Lineage

The teaching passed through:

  1. Vajrasattva himself to
  2. Garab Dorje (who received direct blessing)
  3. Shri Singha (his learned disciple)
  4. Vairochana (who received complete three secret blessings)

The Treasure Revealer

Terdak Lingpa (Rigdzin Gyurme Dorje), who was:

  • A direct emanation of Vairochana
  • Master of both Kama and Terma traditions
  • An accomplished awareness holder (Rigdzin)
  • The central pillar of non-sectarian teachings
  • Great benefactor to the Eight Practice Lineages

Discovery

The treasure was revealed from Guru Rinpoche’s upper secret cave at Namshoe Jingda Namchak Drak.

Authentication and Legacy

  • The blessing power remained unbroken through successive Vajra holders
  • Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche identified eight special distinguishing qualities
  • Many non-sectarian masters have:
    • Practiced this as their essential teaching
    • Achieved signs of realization
    • Maintained its pure transmission

Modern Significance

This teaching remains a profound and complete path, combining the essence of all major practice traditions while maintaining its unbroken blessing lineage from Vajrasattva through to present-day practitioners.
